Let's bust some Loc Myths!

Are you all prepared to debunk some loc myths? With 9 years of experience as a loc specialist, I've encountered nearly every misconception about loc care and maintenance. Much of what you hear is incorrect, and today we will dispel some of these rumors.

1.) You can't wash your starter locs! FALSE

Locs are still hair, and you need to wash them and care for the scalp; a clean scalp leads to healthy hair. Contrary to popular belief, hair does not grow more when it is dirty. When your pores are blocked and covered with dirt, the hair can't breathe or grow. So, wash your hair! Now, you might be wondering what to wash your hair with. Always start with a clarifying shampoo and follow up with a moisturizing shampoo. Don't worry, I'll discuss the best products for your locs in a later article.

2.) Your hair is too soft to loc! FALSE

Alright, ladies and gentlemen, get ready: ANY HAIR TYPE CAN FORM LOCS. Locs are essentially matted hair that we shape into a specific, uniform section. While any hair type can form locs, not every hair type can be maintained in the same way. Each hair type requires maintenance that suits its specific texture.

3.) You have to cut your hair to start your locs. FALSE

You can begin your locs with any hair length. Although the method for starting them might need to be adjusted, there's no need to cut your hair short. The key is to ensure you start your locs on healthy hair.

4.) You can start locs on relaxed hair. TRUE & FALSE

You CAN begin your journey with relaxed hair, but you CAN'T initiate your locs in the traditional manner. If your hair is relaxed and you wish to start locs, you'll need to use the instant locking method, as the hair lacks its natural curl pattern.
