What to expect in the first year of having locs.

Starting your loc journey is exciting—but like any transformation, it comes with its share of surprises, challenges, and milestones. The first year is all about patience, self-discovery, and learning to care for your hair in new ways. Whether you’re starting with twists, coils, braids, or freeform, here’s what you can expect in your first year of having locs:

1. The “Ugly Phase” Is Mostly a Myth

The first thing you need to know about starter locs is THERE IS NO UGLY PHASE!

Many people refer to the early stage of locs as the “ugly phase”—but let’s be honest, it’s only “ugly” if you believe it is. The budding stage can look frizzy, uneven, or unpredictable, but it’s completely normal. Your hair is learning how to lock, and that process doesn’t always look polished. Embrace it. This is a part of your journey, not a flaw.

2. Frizz Will Be Your New Best Friend

Frizz is a natural part of the locking process, especially in the early stages. It might feel frustrating at first, but it’s actually a good sign that your hair is starting to bind and form locs. Don’t over-manipulate or obsess over neatness—let your hair do what it’s supposed to.

3. Your Routine Will Change (And That’s OK)

You’ll start to wash your hair less often, moisturize differently, and become more intentional about what products you use. Lightweight oils and water-based moisturizers become staples. Less manipulation = healthier locs.

4. You’ll Become More Patient Than Ever

If you’ve never had patients with your hair before you will after you start your locs.

Locs teach you patience. You won’t wake up with fully formed locs overnight. Some sections might loc faster than others. There will be shrinkage, budding, unraveling—and sometimes all three at once. Stay committed and trust the process.

5. You’ll Learn to Let Go of Control

No two loc journeys are alike. You might plan for your locs to look a certain way, but your hair will ultimately decide how it wants to form so always remember don’t compare your locs to anybody elses. That’s the beauty of locs—they’re a reflection of your hair’s natural pattern and personality.

6. Scalp Health Is Key

Keeping your scalp clean and moisturized is essential, especially as your hair starts to mat and lock. It’s a good idea to have a light oil like jojoba, tea tree, or peppermint to help soothe itching or dryness during the early months.

7. People Will Have Opinions—Ignore Them

You’ll probably hear all sorts of comments: “How long are you going to keep them?” “What if you change your mind?” or even unsolicited advice about maintenance. Remember, this journey is yours. Be confident in your decision and surround yourself with support, not skepticism.

8. You’ll Fall In Love With Your Hair—Over and Over Again

Every stage has its beauty. One day you’ll wake up, look in the mirror, and realize how far your locs have come—and how far you’ve come with them. The journey isn’t just physical, it’s deeply personal.

Final Thoughts

The first year of having locs is about transformation, both outside and within. It might not always be easy, but it’s definitely worth it. Take pictures, celebrate milestones, and enjoy the freedom that comes with embracing your natural hair.
